Why the hell am I here? Everyone looks so fucking bright, shiny, and happy. I used to love this annual party. I don’t really mind dressing up. I shudder when I think about last year. The party when I found out Evie had fucked Tate on our first date.

Our first fucking date. When I kissed her on the forehead, trying like hell to get to know the real her and left, wanting so much more. She fucked him.

And still, after finding that out, I stayed. I tried like hell to make it work with her. Why?

As I look around the room and see her standing with Tate, his arm around her protectively, letting everyone know she’s his, I honestly couldn’t fucking tell you.

I was naïve. I thought she loved me. I thought I loved her.

I believed that was all you needed.

Turns out, I’m a fucking idiot.

‘Because she loved him all along, and I was just the chump she spent her time with, waiting for him.

I force myself to look away from them, and then I’m staring directly into the eyes of my friend, or, should I say, my former friend. Jay looks straight-up homicidal as his eyes dart from me and then to Morgan.

Fuck. She’s here. And she’s absolutely beautiful.

Her green dress clings to every curve. Her blond hair is curly and left down. When her eyes meet mine, I see all the pain I caused, it’s too fucking much.

I dart toward the open bar and don’t look back.

One or two drinks can’t hurt. Not enough to get trashed, like on Thanksgiving, but I have to have something to dull this ache in my chest.

Because it’s all too fucking much.

Morgan looks like she would rather be anywhere else. Jay, who was like a brother to me, looks like he could kill me. Frankie is stuck in the middle of it all.

Merry fucking Christmas.
